Braided Wire

Braided wire is a versatile structure for many applications. Almost every alloy you can think of can be made into braided wire. Steel braid, copper braided wire, tinned braided wire, and more can be crafted to suit your project. Braided wire is renowned for its flexibility and strength, and it can be rolled flat or formed into a tube. Flat braids are great for flexible connections, electrical leads, or grounding straps. Tubular braids are generally used as shielding to protect other wires and cables.

Various Uses of Braided Wire

Braided wire is often the most visible, yet unassuming, of wires. For its strength and flexibility, it is often used for shielding but can occasionally be used as a flexible electrical connection. Its high resistance to breakage and vibration also makes braids, such as the steel braid, a popular protective option for hoses in automotive applications.

Copper-braided wire is often used as a flexible connection between larger components. Because braided wire is made up of many smaller strands, it is much more resistant to the wear and tear that larger cables and wires would suffer under continuous motion and vibration.

However, many cables use braided wire to create a tubular sheath that protects an insulated conductive core from damage and electromagnetic interference. Because the braid is grounded, the central conductive wire can carry the signal safely within the cable. The braid serves as both a physical barrier against damage and a shield against external electromagnetic interference. In fact, coaxial cables commonly use this property.
