Flat Vs. Tubular Braided Wire

When you do electrical work, you know that there are plenty of different wire types to choose for your project. Aside from different metals, there are different ways wires are bundled, from flat tinned copper braid to tubular braid wiring. If you’re trying to make a choice, or just want to learn more about braided wire choices, there are different uses for tinned copper flat braid wire and tubular wire, and reasons why people choose each.

Uses Where Flexibility Is A Must

This type of wire is typically used for shielding around cables and as protective braid over hoses and tubing. Braided wire protects conductive wires against interference. It’s used for applications where curving of wiring is necessary, like when making cables, such as the coaxial ones people use to connect cable television in their homes. The flexibility also allows it to fit around corners and tight spaces more easily, which is why it is also often used in the automotive industry. Tinned copper flat braid wire can also be used as ground straps and as flat power leads.

When is Tubular Braided Wire Used?

While flat braids are good for flexible applications, tubular braided wire is generally more used just as shielding around other cables. Tubular braiding, similarly to flat tinned copper braid, is best at handling large currents at low voltages, but is better used as shielding instead of as grounding straps. It is also ideal for these braided wires to be tinned, or insulated, so that oxidation between wire stands doesn’t degrade the overall performance quality of the braid.

Both tinned copper flat braid and tubular braid wire are available in many different sizes, and if you don’t want copper there are other metals and alloys you can choose for your work. Braided wire is ideal for small spaces, and because tinned braids have built in insulation, they are more resistant to corrosion and interference.
