Handling Automotive Wire Safely

Even if you’re a passionate do-it-yourselfer under the hood of your car, working with wiring is a dangerous prospect. In general, most car fires are the result of a wiring problem, so taking on this type of project by yourself is a high-risk undertaking. If you’re determined to get inside and tinker around with the automotive wire, you should exercise some serious caution and make sure that you know what you’re doing.

General Safety Tips

When you’re working with automotive wire, you have to exercise some of the same cautions you would in any other electrical wiring situation—most notable, killing the power. Your car should always be turned off when you’re working on it, and not just the engine, either. The electrical systems should never be running, or else you could seriously injure yourself or start a fire. On that note, always keep a fire extinguisher nearby, just in case.

Especially in older vehicles, wiring can crack and show other signs of aging that necessitate replacing. When you’re working with your car’s wiring, check every cable for signs of age. An automotive wire with a cracked, broken or torn sheath is a liability. Check the wiring harness as well—the older the car, the greater the risk that the wiring harness is damaged and needs to be replaced.

Know Your Stuff

Rewiring your car isn’t like rewiring an entertainment center—if you get just one thing wrong, you could be dealing with an engine fire the next time you’re cruising down the interstate highway. Before attempting to check, replace or reconnect any of your automotive wire, study the inside of your vehicle and the proper wiring. Use a diagram of an automobile wiring setup to study the proper connections and the safest methods for replacing them. If you don’t feel confident working with your car’s wiring, take it to a professional. If you get any of your connections wrong, you may not see any signs of it until it’s too late.
