Optical Cable for High Speed Digital

Optical cable is a type of cable that contains one or more optical fibers used for carrying light. These types of cables are used for a number of different applications, including long-distance telecommunications, or providing high-speed data connections. Optical cable consists of a core and a cladding layer, and the cladding is typically coated with a layer of plastic. The coating protects the fiber from damage, and the individual fibers have a tough resin bugger layer that forms the core of the cable.

Optical cables can be used for indoor and outdoor use, though cables used in a more stressful environment will require a more robust construction. In these instances, loose-tube construction is often used, which allows the cable to stretch without stretching the fiber itself.  This protects the optical fiber from tension during laying and due to temperature changes.

Why Use Optical Cable?

Optical cable is typically used for telecommunications, including phone lines and internet. When fiber optics replace copper wiring for things like long distance calls and Internet traffic, costs are lowered, and those savings may be passed onto the users. Other reasons optical cable is an ideal choice is because it can transmit more information with a greater degree of fidelity, over greater distances. Additionally, it’s more difficult to “tap” than copper wires are, so it’s a more secure choice for the data being transmitted. Optical cable is also less likely to be damaged by the elements—copper cable is sensitive to water and chemicals, while optical cable is not.
